Cycling, Ice Cream & Books in Wolfville: A Fun Family Day Trip

Looking for one of the best easy cycling routes in Nova Scotia? The Kings County Rail Trail in Wolfville offers flat terrain, wide-open farmland views, and a relaxed pace that works beautifully for families. From quiet dyke lands to historic landscapes and welcoming small-town stops, this outing combines gentle outdoor activity with rewarding places to explore. Paired with ice cream at The Real Scoop and a browse through Rainbow’s End Books, it’s one of the most enjoyable and accessible day trips in the Annapolis Valley.

Stop 1: Cycle the Kings County Rail Trail toward Grand Pré

The Kings County Rail Trail follows a former railway corridor, creating a wide, well-maintained path with gentle grades. Because it was originally built for trains, the route is smooth and flat, making it ideal for children and casual cyclists.
Begin in Wolfville and ride toward Grand Pré, passing orchards, vineyards, and reclaimed tidal marshlands along the Minas Basin. The dykes you’ll see along the route were originally built by Acadian settlers in the 1600s using aboiteaux — wooden one-way valves that drained salt marshes while keeping tidal water out. This remarkable engineering transformed the landscape into fertile farmland that still supports agriculture today.
The ride can be as short or as long as you like. If you don’t have your own bikes, Wolfville operates a seasonal Recreation Hub bike loan program that is open to visitors. Adult and children’s bikes (including sizes as small as 20″) are available, and helmets are typically included. Reserving ahead is recommended, especially during the summer season.

Stop 2: Ice Cream at The Real Scoop

After your ride, stop at The Real Scoop just up from Wolfville’s main street for homemade ice cream. It’s a long-standing local favourite and the perfect reward after time on the trail. Enjoy your cones outside and take in the lively but relaxed feel of Wolfville. It’s a simple moment that just may be the highlight of the day.

Stop 3: Browse Rainbow’s End Books

Just around the corner on the main street, Rainbow’s End Books & Discs is packed with used books, comics, and unexpected treasures. It’s a welcoming, independent shop where visitors of all ages can find something to enjoy. Spend some time browsing the shelves for some treasures to enjoy later at your tent.
